Michael’s twin boys, today’s heroes, were born with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a rare immunodeficiency ailment that affects one in every 500,000 individuals each year.According to the National Institutes of Health, this illness causes immune system abnormalities, rendering individuals unable to fight infections. A bone marrow transplant is the only known treatment for this condition.
Robin Parnell and her husband had two children, Dominic, 9, and Michael, 4, until they discovered Robin was pregnant with twins. The twins were born early and were in the intensive care unit for two weeks.
They were later diagnosed with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). Dominic had the condition as well and was cured through transplantation. Further testing revealed that Michael was a perfect match for the transplant. He was asked whether he wanted to help his brothers despite the fact that he was only four years old.
The tiny child accepted to the transplant despite being warned that it would be uncomfortable and require the insertion of a needle into his spine. He was terrified, but volunteered to do it to save his brothers, saying that he was a superhero.The operation went well, and the twin boys lived thanks to the young superhero, who is still proud of his unselfish act two years later.
