The Mom Who Doesn’t Allow Her Kids To Go On Sleepovers Explains Why

November 13, 2023

A Virginia mom has sparked some serious debate after she turned to TikTok and Instagram to share her unpopular view that children should not go to sleepovers because she believes them to be “unsafe” gatherings. Tara Huck sent her followers and fans into a frenzy after posting her unpopular parenting view on social media, including the Chinese-created social media app TikTok. The viral video has amassed more than eight million views across social media and has become what some people are calling the most “unpopular parenting opinions” in America to date.

Huck always declines her children’s request to sleep over at a friend’s house. She fears that potential threats are too great, and she does not want her children to be unsafe while sleeping at another person’s home, even if they are trusted individuals.

The Virginia mom captioned her viral video, “This should be fun,” while she went into detail about her three unpopular parenting views that other people find offensive and shocking.

In addition to flat-out refusing to allow her children to attend sleepovers at their friends’ houses, she also does not limit screen time so long as her kids finish their homework and chores. This is another unpopular parenting trick that many people do not follow because screen time can be detrimental to a child’s development.

Huck’s third point of view on parenting is about how she won’t give her children any extra food if they refuse to eat what she made for them. This is something that many other parents follow and is not as unpopular as the other two statements.

“Unpopular parenting opinions: I don’t allow sleepovers, as long as school and chores are done, I don’t limit screen time, [and] if they don’t eat what I eat, they don’t eat,” Tara said.

Huck received so much feedback about her unpopular parenting opinions that she uploaded a follow-up video to social media to further explain her reasoning and talk back to commenters.

“People are coming for me, I mean making troll accounts left and right, sending me nasty messages, wishing death upon me, all because I don’t allow sleepovers,” she said in the second video.

Why does this Virginia mom ban her children from going to sleepovers? Here is what she said.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen, and it has nothing to do with me not trusting my kids,” Huck said. “It has nothing to do with me not wanting my kids to have fun. It has nothing to do with anything besides the fact that you can not be positive that something won’t happen to your children at somebody else’s house. Even if you trust those people, they could have older siblings, parents, and friends staying over. There are a million other factors. There are too many other factors that I’m not willing to risk my children’s safety for them to have a sleepover.”
