When her husband abandoned her and their daughter Grace, Sophia felt as though her idyllic life had burst like a bubble.
Grace missed her dad terribly, even though she acted as though nothing was wrong. Her vivacious personality abruptly gave way to a reserved manner. Since she had been harmed herself and was finding it more difficult than she had ever imagined to find the strength to move on, Sophia was powerless to stop her from becoming quiet and depressed.
Sophia recommended that she and Grace visit the girl’s grandmother, who lived far away, one day. The journey was meant to serve as a means of escape from the reality that they had to confront together.
Grace was reluctant to travel, but after her mother persuaded her, the girl eventually consented.
There was awkward silence in the car during the lengthy journey. Grace grumbled about the ride, which seemed longer than usual, while keeping her face pressed against the car’s door glass.
Sophia played Grace’s favorite song to try to lift her spirits. The girl was too depressed to sing, but she did smile.
Grace shouted as they drove. In the middle of the highway, she saw a man carrying a sign. The word “Help” was written on the sign. She begged her mother to pause and check on the stranger, who appeared in dire need of help.
The man’s clothes were ripped and filthy, and he appeared exhausted. Sophia’s heart began to race as he attempted to approach them. Immediately she turned on the engine and drove on without thinking.
Grace was furious. Sophia refused when she urged her mother to pause once more and assist the desperate man. Desperate for a respite from the lengthy drive, she instead drove as fast as she could and stopped at a gas station. When she asked Grace to exit the car, she refused to do so because she was too upset and insisted on waiting for her mother inside.
Sophia bought Grace a chocolate bar and a cup of coffee for herself, but when she got back to the car, Grace was gone.
Sophia’s anxiety increased as she began to look around. She asked some of the people there if they had seen a girl with dark hair, but nobody had, so she began shouting Grace’s name at the top of her lungs.
After that, Sophia got into her vehicle and drove back and forth. She prayed her girl wasn’t hurt, and her heart was pounding.
She saw Grace strolling down the highway at that precise moment. Although the girl was afraid and felt bad for worrying her mother, she was unable to leave the odd-looking man with the sign by himself. She pleaded with her mother to visit him and check on him.
Despite her fear, Sophia made the decision to try to find the man because she knew how much it meant to Grace to help him. He was standing in the same place, which was not surprising.
They pulled to a stop and went over to him. He was injured in addition to needing some food and water.
All the man wanted was to be taken to the nearby town.
He ended up on the highway after a cab driver robbed him and took his phone and wallet. Since no one would stop to give him a lift or make a phone call, he was unable to call for assistance.
Sophia was perplexed when the man gave her the address where he was to go. It was a large company’s address.
The security guard at the entrance to the enormous building rushed in the direction of the man as soon as they got there. He said, grinning, that they had been looking for him for a few days and were quite concerned for his safety, but that they were happy to see him at last.
Sophia only knew that if it weren’t for her daughter’s king heart, that man wouldn’t be able to get home, at least not in the days ahead. She didn’t know if he was the company’s owner or just a significant employee.
Sophia took away from that day the important lesson that helping those in need is what keeps the world turning. She and Grace’s relationship was strengthened by that amazing experience, and they began to view life in a completely different light.
