McDonald’s is one of the most ruthless fast-food restaurant chains in the world. The company will stop at nothing until the entire world has access to its burgers and chicken products. However, locals are furious after a McDonald’s location erected a sign advertising their “McCrispy” menu item right next to a sign for a local crematorium, labeling the fast-food giant’s sign tasteless and inappropriate.
Some people found the McDonald’s ad to be funny because it played off the fact that human bodies were being “crisped” at the crematorium. However, most people agree that the McDonald’s McCrispy sign in the United Kingdom was offensive since human bodies are being burned in the furnace at the crematorium down the road.
The sign was erected along roadway A39 in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The McCrispy sign was put up near a bus stop that was located across from the Penmount Crematorium on the road in Truro, Cornwall. Angry locals called the advertisement for the tasty McDonald’s sandwich “tasteless” since the fast-food giant seemed to be tone deaf to the fact that they were putting up the sign right next to a sign advertising the location of the British crematorium.
One woman, who had her mother-in-law cremated at the British establishment in question, turned to social media to express her outrage at McDonald’s for inadvertently poking fun at the fact that human remains were being burnt to a crisp inside the crematorium near the McDonald’s location.
“Although I can see the funny side, it is tasteless, and I’m sure some grieving family members won’t like to see it when visiting Penmount for the funeral and cremation of a loved one.”
Another person added, “How funny it is will probably depend on how long ago you followed the crematorium sign wearing a black tie.”
Although most people online found the McDonald’s advertisement to be offensive, there were a lot of people who would still find its placement to be funny, if not downright hilarious.
“Fell off the chair laughing,” one fan of the sign wrote on social media.
After the sign sparked controversy among motorists in the area as well as people online, McDonald’s came forward with a statement confirming that they would be removing the “McCrispy” sign that was located near the crematorium.
A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “We were unaware of the road sign in the vicinity of this bus stop. However, in light of the concerns raised by CornwallLive, we have asked for our advertisement to be removed.”
Cornwall Council runs the crematorium and owns the bus shelter. They were unable to comment on the controversial McDonald’s sign.
After the McDonald’s sign is taken down, some locals feel that Burger King would put up a sign advertising their flame-grilled Whopper. That would also spark controversy, given that the Whopper is grilled using a blazing flame.
