Several years ago, a prominent California Democrat was forced to resign after she was linked to a massive network of fraud and corruption. Melahat Rafiei, who led the Orange County Democratic Party, stepped down after the FBI implicated her in a bribery scheme that traded massive sums of money for preferential business access. This story is still relevant because it highlights the endemic corruption that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been rooting out during its battle with the deep state. For context, DOGE was established by an early Trump executive order and charged with ending the waste and fraud that plagues the government. Despite high-profile corruption busts and billions in savings, Democrats have been hampering the department at every turn.
According to documents from the FBI, Rafiei used her position to bribe local officials to pass specific zoning laws. In the document, the Democrat is referred to as “CW1″ because she ended up cooperating as a witness for the bureau. The affidavit said, “CW1 began to devise a scheme whereby CW1 would solicit money from CHS1 and CHS2 with the intention of paying bribes to two elected members of the Irvine City Council in exchange for the Council Members performing official acts, resulting in the passage of favorable cannabis laws.Building out their case, the FBI wrote, “CW1 was arrested on a complaint (based on the 2018 corruption scheme involving Irvine officials) and subsequently brought to the FBI office in Orange County, where CW1 was interviewed. CW1 agreed to cooperate with the FBI during CW1’s interview.”
Defending her decision to cooperate with the authorities, the California Democrat denied being pressured or coerced to rat out her coconspirators. She stated, “It was in fact my dedication to these principles that led me to accept the request by federal investigators and prosecutors to serve as a cooperating witness in an ongoing investigation to uncover corruption among Republican operatives and elected officials in Anaheim. I was not compelled to cooperate. Any assertions to the contrary are false. However, an agent involved with the case believed she tried to lie to the FBI during her testimony. He said, “I also believe CW1 has omitted material facts to investigators throughout CW1’s cooperation with the FBI, including additional instances where CW1 has offered to pay bribes to elected public officials. CW1 and the government have not been able to reach an agreement on a pre-indictment resolution, and at this time, there is no further cooperation expected.”
Getting ahead of the scandal, Ada Briceño, chair of the local Democratic Party of Orange County, called for the corrupt party official to step down. She said, “The Democratic Party will never condone misconduct. I trust the facts will come out in due course and the Democratic Party of Orange County supports a full investigation of corruption against any individual,” adding, “I think she should resign.Controversially, some Democrats, such as Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan, chose to defend the embattled politician. She said, “The recent news about the FBI’s investigation into public corruption in Anaheim is disappointing and sows mistrust in local government. I stand with (Rafiei) and believe our justice system will do its job and clear her name.”
