Spanking as a method of child discipline has become a contentious topic, with the American Academy of Pediatrics deeming it ineffective and possibly harmful. Despite this, some parents, including Kelly Clarkson, advocate for its use.
In a 2019 radio interview, Kelly, a mother of two children—8-year-old River Rose and 6-year-old Remy—expressed that she is “not above spanking” when it comes to discipline.
She clarified that she does not advocate for harsh punishment, but rather “a little spanking.” Clarkson shared her personal experience, stating that her own parents spanked her, and she believes it did not hinder her success in life. “I’m from the South, y’all,” she said. “My mom would call the principal if I ever got in trouble at school and give permission for them to spank me. I turned out fine and feel great about it.”
Despite her success as a singer, songwriter, author, and TV personality—which recently earned her a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame—Clarkson acknowledged the controversy surrounding her parenting style.
She mentioned the challenges of disciplining her children in public, where others may judge her methods. “It’s tricky when you’re out in public,” she noted. “People think it’s wrong, but I see nothing wrong with spanking. I believe in it, so you might see me giving a little spanking at the zoo.”
However, she emphasizes that she communicates with her children beforehand about her intentions. “I tell them, ‘Hi, I’m going to spank you on your bottom if you don’t stop right now; this is ridiculous,’ and honestly, it’s really helped. They don’t act out as often.”
What do you think of Kelly Clarkson’s approach to child discipline? Should parents have the freedom to discipline their children as they see fit?
