Country star Vince Gill was instructed not to sing about Jesus so this is how he resonded

July 28, 2024

Vince Gill, a country music musician, has released over 20 albums and received a slew of honors, including more Grammys than any other male country performer.

Gill first came to fame in 1979 while playing in the country rock band Pure Prairie League; in 2007, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Now, forty years later, Gill is still in great demand as a musician; he most recently shared the Grand Ole Opry stage with Little Big Town.

But as he was performing, a fascinating thing happened. Gill was confronted with a conundrum as a fervent Christian, despite the prohibition on singing religious music, especially ones referencing Jesus.

Gill, unfazed, decided to creatively disobey the order. He chose to sing “Why Me Lord,” a soul-stirring song written by Kris Kristofferson in 1972 and notably performed by Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, rather than abandon his faith.

A standing ovation from the crowd proved that Gill’s performance was powerful. His bravery in being loyal to his beliefs and artistic identity was on full display.

Gill has every right to make his own choices in his proper home in the Country Music Hall of Fame!
