The flight that brought Donald’s dreams to life was made possible by Dream Flights, a volunteer organization founded by Darryl Fisher. With the loving intent of honoring veterans, Dream Flights took flight itself, far exceeding its initial ambitions. The 1942 Boeing biplane that carried Donald was a piece of history, a relic of the past that once trained the hopeful aviators of 1940s.
“If you were 18 or 19 in 1942 and joined the service, and you’re going to be an airman and walked out to the airport for your first flight, there’s a 90% chance this is the plane you were flying,” explained Darryl Fisher, the pilot who shared this extraordinary experience with Donald.
Donald’s flight, his 6,000th of its kind, marked an astounding milestone for Dream Flights. The organization, which blossomed from a simple idea to show appreciation, became a conduit for life-changing moments for veterans like Donald. “We had this idea to call a local care facility and bring a veteran out on a flight, just as a lark,” said Darryl Fisher, reflecting on the unexpected journey of Dream Flights. “I had no idea this is where it would go.”

“It was an honor to serve the country,” Donald humbly said, his voice carrying the weight of a century’s worth of wisdom and gratitude. “It really was. Being a product of the Depression, the Navy, the military gave me all my education and my opportunities and introduced me to great people to work with.”
