During a meeting in the Oval Office with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, President Donald Trump couldn’t help but pause and take notice of Vice President JD Vance’s festive attire.
Vance had chosen to wear a green tie and a pair of shamrock-adorned socks in honor of the occasion. As Trump discussed economic matters, he suddenly pointed out the socks, drawing laughter from those in the room.
“I love these socks! What’s with these socks? I’m trying to stay focused, but I have to ask about the VP’s socks,” Trump remarked, sparking amusement from Vance, Martin, and others present.
Later, Vance shared a video clip of the lighthearted exchange on social media, humorously commenting, “I knew he’d say something about these socks,” along with a laughing emoji.
Earlier in the day, Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, hosted Prime Minister Martin and his wife at the Vice President’s residence. During their meeting, Vance made a point to showcase his themed socks.
“In your honor, I have worn these shamrocks,” he told Martin with a grin. “Later in the Oval Office, I have a feeling the president is going to have something to say about them.”
He playfully added, “If he notices, you’ll have to defend me and say this is an important part of strengthening the Irish-American relationship.”
The gathering also highlighted the deep historical ties between Ireland and the United States. Prime Minister Martin spoke about the enduring friendship between the two nations, particularly the role the U.S. played in helping to broker peace in Northern Ireland.
“Nowhere is the strength of the U.S.-Irish relationship more evident than in our own peace process,” Martin said. “Forty-four years ago, President Reagan called for a just and peaceful resolution to the conflict that had long impacted our island. Leaders from both sides of the aisle in the U.S. supported the effort, and today, the peace we enjoy stands as a lasting achievement.”
He emphasized that Ireland remains committed to supporting international peace efforts, including in Ukraine and the Middle East.
“The United States has been a steadfast friend of Ireland for centuries,” Martin added. “Indeed, it was one of the first nations to recognize our independence.”
The lighthearted moment in the Oval Office served as a reminder that, even in serious diplomatic meetings, small gestures—like a pair of shamrock socks—can add a touch of humor and camaraderie to international relations.
