He took the opportunity of the video message to not only wish his fans a happy new year but to also reflect on his enduring career and his personal journey of recovery from addiction.The video, posted on Friday, 29 December, features the actor wishing everyone watching a happy New Year. He then reflects on his decision to quit drinking. He says in the video, “Hello there, Happy New Year to you all!” adding, “All of you revellers and drinkers, all having fun. Wonderful!”
The actor began his sobriety journey in December 1975. He encouraged fans who are in similar situation to seek help like he did. The actor then added his message saying, “Happy New Year, have a great time. If you get a hangover, remember me, I don’t get them anymore because 48 years ago today, I stopped. I got help for it and my life changed,” he added. “I don’t envy you having fun out there, but if you need help, there’s a time. Life is in session. Go for it.”
His 4.8 million followers appreciated the message and congratulated him on his 48 years of sobriety. “Congrats on 48 years sober,” one such fan wrote. “What an inspiration you are. Happy New Year, Tony.”
