American journalist and author David Cay Johnston, in a display of intolerance, wrote, “Members praying on the House floor offends both our Constitution and the New Testament, which denounces public displays of devotion. The blasphemy of the new Speaker, who says God ordained him, is just as disgusting.” Johnston’s condemnation was accompanied by an image of House Republicans kneeling in prayer—an image that should symbolize unity but instead became a target for liberal scorn.
