There’s no denying that Archie Bunker was a beloved television character. He starred in «All in the Family» for years, and millions of Americans felt they could identify with Bunker’s perspectives on what it meant to be an American.
According to the episode, Bunker is a devoted American who has experience in the military, which explains why he was hesitant to watch as another guy disrespectfully treated the Star-Spangled Banner and everything that it stood for.Bunker never bothered about being politically incorrect because he liked being patriotic. Bunker’s support for the national anthem continues to resonate with millions of Americans who continue to place their pride in America before all else, even though some of his remarks have not aged well in light of the «woke» revolution currently sweeping the country.
Bunker and Meathead were watching television together at the time of this scene. Meathead grumbled against the national anthem when it was playing before a sporting game, claiming that it was a bad song since it exalted the horrors of war. Meathead was protesting the national anthem since it was composed during the War of 1812 between the fledgling United States of America and Great Britain, despite the fact that contemporary detractors of the anthem allege it is discriminatory toward Black, brown, and indigenous people of color.
Meathead voiced his disapproval of the national anthem, but Archie Bunker promptly defended it.
To his father-in-law, Meathead admonishes, «That is one awful song.» Bunker informs his son-in-law that he cannot believe what he has heard. In disbelief over what he just heard his son-in-law say, he turns to look at Meathead with his eyes bulging out of his head. «Don’t get me started on anything, Meathead. I’m observing the contest. Shut your face; that’s a lovely tune. Meathead becomes agitated at Bunker’s direct assault. He swivels in his chair and is ready to make a claim of his own to refute Bunker’s.
«Huh? Even as a song, the song is terrible since it celebrates war. Nobody could recall the words.
You’re probably going to ruin my game, right? Bunker fought back.
«Are you able to recall the words?» «Certainly, I can!» Bunker yells.
Meathead then gives the patriotic Archie Bunker the responsibility of singing the song’s opening verses. You’ll be laughing so hard you’ll be rolling on the floor when what occurs next occurs. Meathead persists and won’t restart the game until Bunker has sung the national anthem.
Meathead enjoys the pleasure of informing Bunker that he is «wrong,» even if he enthusiastically recites his lines. On the YouTube video shown below, several people commented on this hilariously funny segment from All in the Family. Talk about selecting your fights. Mike simply couldn’t let Archie enjoy his football game, including the playing of the national anthem, without talking.
«Go, Archie!» In their arguments, Mike often comes out on top; however, in two instances, Archie was right and Mike was wrong. One of them is the current incident in which Mike disrespects the National Anthem.
