We may receive many different gifts in our life but the wedding gift is going to be one of the most special. That gift is given to help a new couple start a life together and it often has some of the most touching sentiments behind it. Sometimes, there may even be some sentimental value that is behind the gift and those types of gifts are often better than anything else we could possibly receive.
We may have heard about unusual wedding gifts before but when you hear about what was given to this couple, it might be at the top of the list. Their Aunt Allison told them that she was giving them a special gift but they weren’t allowed to open it until they had a disagreement. They left it on the shelf and decided that it would just stay there. Nine years later, they decided that it was time to open it up and see what was inside.
When Aunt Allison gave them the package, they said they would agree to the terms.
They had small fights on occasion over the years and they may have even thought about opening the gift but they refused to open it for a number of reasons.
Kathy, the wife, explained why they held onto it so long in a social media post:
“There had obviously been plenty of disagreements, arguments and slammed doors throughout our 9 years. There were even a couple of instances where we both considered giving up… but we never opened the box.
“I honestly think that we both avoided turning to the box, because it would have symbolized our failure. To us, it would have meant that we didn’t have what it takes to make our marriage work – and we’re both too stubborn and determined for that. So, it forced us to reassess situations. Was it really time to open the box? What if this isn’t our worst fight? What if there’s a worse one ahead of us and we don’t have our box?!? As my Great Uncle Bill would say, ‘Nothing is ever so bad that it couldn’t get worse.’”
Brandon and Kathy recognized that something had changed when they put their two children to bed one night. They were drinking wine together and talking about the wedding that they had attended in Kalamazoo. They eventually began talking about where they met.
They then begin to think about what they could purchase for the newlywed couple and they then started to think about their own wedding day and the gifts that meant the most of them.
“The funny thing? The gift that meant the very most was still sitting in a closet… unopened,” Kathy said.
The funny thing is, they had changed houses three different times and the package stayed in the closet for nine years. Maybe they thought that it would only be a bad situation if they opened it.
When the big night came, they decided to open the gift and see what they were able to do for somebody else.
Two handwritten notes were on the inside, one to her and one to him.
“Go get a pizza, shrimp or something you both like,” the note to Kathy read, while Brandon’s told him to “Go get flowers and a bottle of wine.”

There were also two wine glasses, a crystal flower vase, bath soap, bubbles and lotions inside. It was designed to help them get over any storm that they faced.
It wasn’t only the material objects it was the gesture that had an impact.
“All along, we assumed that the contents of that box held the key to saving a marriage – an age-old trick – unbeknownst to us rookies,” Kathy explained. “After all, my Great Aunt and Uncle had been married for nearly half a century. So, we thought the box would save ‘us’ – and in a way it did.”
They learned a little bit about patience by waiting to open the box for so long.
This couple was happy that they waited and now they could enjoy the box in a special way
