Life can surprise us and make things hard for us. Melissa McCabe was only 14 when her life took a dramatic turn—she discovered she was pregnant. Instead of giving up, she decided to keep pursuing education to provide for her baby boy. And now, despite some nasty comments from teachers, she has earned her BTEC diploma and is ready for the bright future ahead of her.
Melissa was just a normal teenager from Tranmere, England. She liked to do things that other teens liked to do. But in 2020, her life changed when she took a test and it said she was having a baby. This was hard for her, but she was happy and got ready for the new family member.
In November 2020, her sweet baby, Arthur, was born. Like any mother, Melissa loved him and wanted to give him the best life. Motherhood can be tough—sleepless nights, pain, beauty, and hormones going wild in a postpartum body. For other people, it is a time of rest and adjusting to a new role, but Melissa didn’t have the luxury to do so.
On top of caring for her new baby, she also had to do a lot of schoolwork. She figured that if she wanted to make sure Arthur had a happy future, she had to stay in education so she could eventually get a good job. This was hard, but Melissa knew she could do it.

Some people were not nice to her because she was a teen mom. They said bad things about her. Some of her friends at Ridgeway High School also talked about her. But Melissa did not care; she kept working hard for her goal.
Soon, her hard work paid off when she received her exam results. She was overjoyed to find that she achieved an impressive trio of passes in animal care, business, travel, and tourism. Hopefully, she had a big cake to celebrate.
Melissa said, “When I first knew I was having a baby, I was worried about my future and thought I might have to stop going to school to take care of Arthur. But I chose to keep going to school, and I am very happy that I did. It was hard, but it was worth it.”
But Melissa is not done yet. She has big plans to keep going to school and study health and social care. She also wants to get a part-time job to help her family. Moms are amazing!
They say it takes many people to help a child grow. Melissa has many people who help her—her family, especially her brother Kyle and his wife, Amy, who help with baby Arthur. Melissa is thankful for their help and the help from her teachers.
The internet can be mean sometimes, but Melissa has a lot of support from people online, especially from her TikTok followers who say nice things to her. Her video of her taking her son to prom was very popular and got 1.3 million views.
To those who leave mean comments, Melissa has a clear answer: “People need to start minding their own business, and if they don’t have anything positive to say, they should keep it to themselves. I’m doing my best to be the best mom and person I can be.” Just like our moms taught us when we were little, if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
